Online Resource - Thread - Bare.com

Hello again Stitchers! Today I wanted to talk to you about yet another of one of my favorite online resources which is called Thread - Bear.com. I love this website because it has multiple tools and calculators in one place. I linked directly to the tools and calculators page.

List of Tools and Calculators and their functions

  • Find the Closest DMC Color Chart Thread. Need to find the nearest alternative thread color to substitute in a pattern? This tool allows you to select or enter any DMC code and will give you the best alternatives from the DMC Color Chart to use instead. Just enter the code for a thread or click on a thread color (they are conveniently arranged to match the Official DMC Color Chart) and you’ll be instantly given a list of the best substitute DMC thread colors closest to it.

  • DMC Color Scheme Generator. Select any color to see the closest DMC threads using Complementary, Split Complementary, Analogous, Triadic, and Tetradic color-wheel theory. Perfect for generating color schemes for your next design.
  • Match the closest DMC Threads to a color. Find the nearest DMC Thread colors to any color value you select Tip: Select the color you want to match using the color selector or the RGB sliders. The selected color is shown, with the HEX color, and the closest DMC thread codes displayed below. The main color selector is specially designed to make it easy to change the hue, saturation, and lightness independently, which is more difficult when using RGB.

  • Calculate the Fabric Size Required. Make sure the fabric you buy will be large enough for the cross-stitch pattern you are stitching using this easy-to-use calculator. Ideal if you need to convert between fabric sizes. Just enter the width and height of the pattern in stitches or inches (together with the fabric count that it was designed for) and then read off the dimensions for the fabric count you want to use. The table lists both the size of the stitched image part of the pattern together with the size of the fabric which needs to be larger to allow for mounting and framing. NOTE - ALTHOUGH AIDA FABRIC IS FOR CROSS - STITCH IT CAN BE USED IN EMBROIDERY

  • Calculate Number of Skeins Required. Don't buy too few or too many skeins by estimating how many you need using this calculator that uses the number of stitches, fabric size and your stitching style to calculate the number. Just enter the number of strands your stitching with (e.g. “2 over) and the number of stitches of a particular thread and the number of skeins needed will be displayed for the different fabric counts. The table lists both the specific estimate which can help if you already have some of a colour and can decide if you need more, as well as the rounded up number to buy if you don’t have any.

  • Estimate Completion Time for Projects. Be careful you don't overcommit to a project or plan the size to work on to hit a target date by estimating the completion time based on the size and your stitching speed from previous projects. Just enter the size of a piece that you’ve already completed (in stitches or inches + fabric count) and roughly how long it took you to complete in days, weeks, months, or years (be honest, no one will see it but you!). Based on that the calculator will show the average number of stitches you complete per day. Next enter the size of the pattern you’re considering (again, in stitches or in inches together with the fabric count) and the calculator will tell you how long that might take you based on the previous piece.
There are a few other calculators that I did not describe in detail here because they have more relevance to the topic of cross-stitch than embroidery, so if you `are interested in both you can look at them as well.

Happy Stitiching XOXO
